Mercedes-Benz user profiles: how they work and what they can do

A Mercedes-Benz user profile is a way to keep one person's preferences separate from another's in a shared vehicle. In MBUX-equipped cars that support the feature, selecting a profile can bring back saved infotainment and comfort settings. This saves repeated adjustment when drivers alternate, but a profile is not a promise that every control in the car will change automatically. The precise set of saved items follows the vehicle's model, model year, equipment, software and market.

Think of a profile as a collection of preferences associated with a user, rather than a second set of vehicle hardware. If two people use the same car, each can select their own profile and adjust supported settings without deliberately overwriting the other's choices. The car may also retain standard settings when no personal profile is selected. For the exact behaviour of a particular vehicle, its owner's manual and the menus shown in that vehicle are the best reference.

Mercedes-Benz manuals give examples, not a universal checklist. Depending on equipment, a profile may retain seat, steering-wheel and mirror positions; climate and ambient-light choices; radio stations; and MBUX favourites or suggestions. Some systems can load comfort settings when the profile is activated. An older MBUX manual also lists display style and themes, while noting that driver-assistance settings cannot be saved in that profile.

This distinction matters when comparing cars. A seat that lacks the necessary adjustment or memory equipment cannot acquire that capability through a profile. A digital service can also have its own eligibility and activation conditions. Ask which specific preferences can be demonstrated in the vehicle you are considering, rather than relying on a feature list from another model. During a demonstration, save a visible preference, switch users and return to the first profile to see what is actually restored.

The menu wording changes between MBUX generations. In one Mercedes-Benz manual, the route is through the multimedia system's Profiles menu: create a profile, choose an avatar and name, then start with either current or factory settings. Another manual describes adding a user from the user-selection screen and scanning a QR code with the Mercedes me app to link an account. These are examples of different implementations, not one sequence that fits every Mercedes-Benz.

Set up the profile while the vehicle is stationary and follow the prompts on its screen and in its own manual. Choose the profile before adjusting the preferences you want it to remember. Afterward, change to another profile and back to check the result. If a particular setting does not follow you, first check whether that vehicle supports saving it, then whether the change was made under the intended user. This simple test is more useful than assuming that the word “profile” covers all settings.

A profile stored in the vehicle and an account-linked profile should not be treated as identical. The GLC manual describes creating a local profile without registering a mobile phone. It separately describes Mercedes me connect profiles, which require a user account, a linked vehicle and an activated personalisation service for the listed online functions. Additional users may need an invitation from the vehicle owner. In a newer manual, account, PIN and terms-of-use requirements also appear for its profile functions.

Where supported, account linkage can allow settings to be managed or synchronised through Mercedes me. Mercedes-Benz describes cloud-based portability for vehicles with a compatible MBUX generation, but that does not mean every setting moves to every other car. Service availability and functionality depend on the model, production year, optional equipment and country. Before planning to use a profile across vehicles, confirm that the particular vehicles, account and market support the relevant service.

Profiles can contain personal preferences and, depending on the system, access to user-specific content. Mercedes-Benz manuals describe PIN protection, with biometric methods available on some vehicles. Do not assume that a profile name alone prevents another person from seeing or changing information. Use the access options offered by the actual vehicle and account, and check what is shared with other users.

For a family or business car, give each regular driver their own profile if the system supports it. Check which account owns the vehicle connection before adding another user. If you hand over or sell the car, review its user and account settings and follow the vehicle's instructions for removing personal information and vehicle assignment. A temporary driver can use the available guest or standard option where provided; its behaviour should be checked on that MBUX version.

A saved seating position can move hardware when a profile is selected. The Mercedes-Benz manual warns that occupants must stay clear of the driver's seat adjustment area and explains how to stop an adjustment. It also says the driver's seat will not be adjusted if a profile is activated while driving. Treat profile selection as something to finish safely before setting off, and check the seat, mirrors and other driving positions yourself.

Profiles do not replace the driver's responsibility to verify the car's current settings. If a setting seems wrong, make the necessary adjustment when safe and consult the specific manual. Likewise, automatic suggestions depend on system features and, in some manuals, the user's consent and enough recorded activity. A profile can simplify routine use, but it is neither a fixed package of functions nor an automatic transfer of every preference.

When viewing a Mercedes-Benz, ask to see the Profiles or user-selection screen and identify which settings are available on that exact vehicle. Try switching between two users, saving an obvious preference and checking whether it returns. Ask whether account connection is needed for the function you want, whether personalisation services are offered in your market and whether another regular driver can be invited. If you rely on a particular seat or mirror memory behaviour, test it in person.
