Mercedes-Benz CLE vs Audi A5 Coupé: an objective comparison

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupé and Audi A5 Coupé answer a similar desire: a premium two-door car with a usable rear seat. Yet they are not a simple current-model-versus-current-model pairing. Mercedes-Benz presents the CLE as its coupé for customers drawn to the C-Class and E-Class segments. Audi's own site labels the A5 Coupé a previous model, available until 2024. A newly specified CLE and a pre-owned or remaining-market A5 Coupé may therefore carry different age, equipment and ownership assumptions.

Compare a particular CLE configuration with a particular A5 Coupé model year, engine and condition. The newer A5 family should not be treated as though it were the same A5 Coupé. A decision based only on badges or a generic specification sheet can obscure this difference.

Mercedes-Benz quotes 4,850 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,428 mm in height for the CLE Coupé. Audi's published figures for the updated A5 Coupé are 4,697 mm, 1,846 mm and 1,371 mm. On those manufacturer figures, the CLE is 153 mm longer, 14 mm wider and 57 mm taller. These measurements describe the referenced versions; tyres, mirrors and parking equipment still matter when judging whether a car will fit your garage.

Both are two-door cars, so the second row requires access past a front seat. Mercedes-Benz describes an easy-entry function and says its CLE packaging gives rear passengers more room than the earlier C-Class Coupé. That is a comparison with a different Mercedes model, not measured proof that every CLE rear seat beats every A5 Coupé. If adults will travel in back, sit in both cars with the front seats set for their actual drivers. Check head clearance, knee position and the effort of getting out, rather than relying on the external dimensions alone.

The CLE launch material specifies a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an 11.9-inch portrait central display. Mercedes-Benz describes third-generation MBUX with personalization features. Audi describes the updated A5 Coupé interior around its MMI touch display, with different seat and trim choices. The interfaces have different layouts, and option lists vary by vehicle and market. A screen-size comparison cannot tell you which climate, navigation or media controls you will find easier during a drive.

Try the tasks you repeat every day: pairing a phone, changing a destination, adjusting temperature and switching driver profiles. Inspect the actual car or build sheet for audio, lighting, cameras and driver assistance. Do not assume that every feature in a launch presentation is standard on a particular CLE, or that every archived A5 Coupé has identical software and equipment.

Mercedes-Benz said at CLE launch that its coupé engines use 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and identified four-cylinder choices as well as a six-cylinder CLE 450 4MATIC. Audi's archived A5 Coupé documentation lists both TFSI petrol and TDI diesel variants, with model-specific transmissions and quattro availability. Neither nameplate refers to one fixed engine or drivetrain. Comparing a CLE 200 with an A5 40 TDI, for example, would mix fuel type and driving priorities.

First choose your fuel preference, annual mileage and expected use. Then compare actual powertrain variants, service histories and published consumption figures under the same measurement method. A short urban drive may emphasize low-speed response and visibility; a motorway drive may reveal seat comfort, noise and overtaking response. Manufacturer economy figures are standardized measurements, not a promise for local traffic or your driving style. Test the cars on a route that resembles how you will use them.

The age difference changes the ownership calculation. For a new CLE, request the exact specification, current offer, applicable warranty terms and maintenance schedule for the proposed vehicle. For an A5 Coupé, verify the build year, mileage, service records, accident and repair history, remaining coverage if any, and the condition of tyres and wear items. A lower asking price alone says little about the likely cost of the next few years.

Ask for written estimates for routine service and any work already identified by an inspection. Consider insurance, registration, fuel, tyres and expected resale as separate lines, using local quotes for the specific car. Availability, prices and coverage depend on market and individual vehicle; they cannot be inferred from a global model page. There is no universal winner. The CLE may make more sense for someone seeking a current model and a new-car buying process; an individual A5 Coupé may make sense where its condition, price and character align better. Those are buyer scenarios, not claims that one model is categorically superior.
