The V8 and the first response
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 combines a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with a starter generator. Mercedes-Benz describes the V8 as delivering 430 kW (585 hp) and 850 Nm on its G 63 model page. Those figures explain the reserves of thrust, but they do not by themselves describe the way the vehicle feels. The engine’s twin-scroll turbochargers sit between the cylinder heads, an arrangement Mercedes-Benz links to responsiveness. The starter generator is another part of the current powertrain architecture; it does not make the G 63 a purely electric G-Class.
For a buyer, the useful question is how this architecture responds at ordinary speeds. A short opening in traffic, a hill, and a gentle overtake reveal more about accessible torque than a peak-output number. Try small throttle inputs as well as stronger acceleration during a permitted test drive. Notice how progressively the vehicle moves and how readily it settles again when you ease off. Road surface, tyres and the selected mode can change the impression, so compare responses in the same conditions.
The nine-speed transmission shapes the delivery
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G sports transmission transfers the engine’s output to the road. Its role is broader than providing nine ratios: shift timing, gear choice and the way it reacts to a new accelerator request all affect the character of the G 63. Mercedes-Benz describes shifts that maintain traction and support both dynamic acceleration and a more economical driving style. A forceful engine can feel calm when the gearbox holds an appropriate ratio and more urgent when it downshifts promptly.
During a drive, observe whether the transmission anticipates a climb, responds naturally after slowing for a junction, and remains smooth in stop-and-go traffic. Then compare the same route in another suitable road program. The change you feel may come from transmission strategy as much as from engine output. If you regularly drive long distances, ask to experience a steady cruise as well as short bursts of acceleration. That is a better basis for judging everyday fit than concentrating on one dramatic launch.
All-wheel drive and differential locks
The G 63’s powertrain works with all-wheel drive and three selectable differential locks. Mercedes-Benz presents the locks as a way to maintain propulsion on demanding surfaces. They are part of the vehicle’s off-road ability, but their presence does not mean every road or trail calls for their use. The right configuration depends on grip, terrain and the instructions for the particular vehicle.
This distinction matters when comparing a powerful SUV for city travel with one intended for occasional difficult tracks. On paved roads, evaluate how confidently the car puts down power while turning, starting and accelerating within legal limits. If off-road use matters, ask for an explanation of the transfer case, differential locks and the sequence for engaging them before driving on suitable terrain. A demonstration should make clear which controls are used and when the driver should return to an on-road configuration. Tyres, conditions and driver judgement remain important even with sophisticated hardware.
Drive programs change the whole experience
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT allows the driver to choose on-road or off-road programs. The Mercedes-AMG G-Class owner’s manual supplement lists on-road settings including Slippery, Comfort, Individual, Sport and Sport+. It describes Comfort as suited to comfortable, economical driving and Sport or Sport+ as settings for good, dry roads. Individual allows settings for the drive system, suspension, gearbox, AMG DYNAMICS and sound to be combined. Depending on the program, Mercedes-Benz says the vehicle can adjust drive, transmission, steering, suspension and all-wheel-drive behaviour.
The same manual describes Sand, Trail and Rock as off-road programs with different surface aims. These are functional settings, not interchangeable labels for more performance. The manual warns that stability and traction systems may be reduced or switched off in off-road programs and identifies several such modes as unsuitable for public roads. For a buyer whose use is mostly urban or highway, Comfort and appropriate on-road settings deserve more attention than a catalog of extreme modes. For regular unpaved travel, learn the relevant controls with a trained representative and follow the vehicle’s own instructions.
What to look for on a test drive
Plan a route that resembles your real driving. Include low-speed manoeuvres, a smooth road, a slope if available and a legal overtaking opportunity. Begin with a comfortable road setting. Check how easily you can meter power in a parking area and how the gearbox behaves after slowing and accelerating again. On an open, suitable stretch, try a more dynamic road setting and note the difference in response and shifting. Use the same stretch for a fair comparison; otherwise a change in gradient or grip can masquerade as a change in the powertrain.
The G 63 is a substantial high-performance off-roader. Its engine and transmission are only part of the sensation: seating position, sound, suspension setting and available grip also influence what you perceive. Ask yourself whether the fast response is easy to use smoothly, whether the calmer setting fits daily travel and whether passengers find the ride comfortable. A memorable engine note is appealing, but the best purchase decision also accounts for your usual roads and the people who travel with you.
Check the specification of the actual vehicle
A model page describes an architecture, not every vehicle offered in every market. Equipment, program availability, tyres, options and documentation may vary by production date and market. Even a published power or fuel-consumption figure should be read with the model and market context attached. Do not assume a car shown in a different country or model year has the identical specification in Armenia.
Before deciding, ask for the build details of the vehicle you are considering. Confirm the engine and transmission description, relevant drive programs, wheel and tyre specification, any suspension equipment, and the supplied owner documentation. If an off-road function is important to you, request a demonstration of that function on the actual vehicle or a clear explanation of its equipment. Check current availability, price and purchase terms directly with us rather than treating a general model description as an offer. This keeps the comparison focused on a specific car you can buy.
Discuss the G 63 with Avangard Motors
The G 63 character comes from the interaction of its V8, gearbox, all-wheel-drive hardware and program calibration. Strong output is the starting point; usable response and a suitable setting are what you will notice on each journey. We can help you compare the specification of a particular G 63 with the way you intend to drive it in Armenia and beyond.
