Read the name in layers
A name such as Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC carries several kinds of information. Mercedes-Maybach identifies the luxury interpretation within the Mercedes-Benz family. S links the car to the S-Class saloon. The number identifies a particular model variant, while 4MATIC is the all-wheel-drive designation when it appears. The name does not list every item of equipment, the model year or the exact specification offered in a given country.
That distinction matters when comparing advertisements. A short badge is designed to identify a vehicle, not replace its configuration sheet. Start with the family and body style, then use the complete model name and the individual vehicle's specification to make a meaningful comparison. Mercedes-Benz has used names including Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC and S 680 4MATIC; these are examples of the naming structure, not a promise that both versions are available in Armenia now. Our model overview is a useful starting point for the current range.
The connection to Mercedes-Benz models
The S in Mercedes-Maybach S-Class points to the S-Class foundation, but the Maybach designation describes a distinct version rather than a conventional S-Class with a different emblem. Mercedes-Benz describes the Maybach S-Class as combining S-Class technology with Maybach exclusivity and a stronger focus on the rear compartment. The model has its own design details and proportions. If rear-seat travel is central to your decision, compare the actual cabin and seating arrangement instead of assuming that every S-Class gives the same experience. Explore the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class model page for its presentation.
The same reading principle applies to SUVs. Mercedes-Maybach GLS belongs to the GLS-based SUV family; Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is the electric luxury SUV. The EQS SUV wording is important: it identifies an SUV, not the EQS saloon. A Maybach name therefore tells you both where the vehicle sits in the broader Mercedes-Benz range and which character the Maybach version is intended to offer. It does not make a saloon, a combustion-engine SUV and an electric SUV interchangeable.
What do 580, 600 and 680 mean?
Numbers distinguish variants within a model family. Official Mercedes-Benz material has used S 580 and S 680 for the Maybach S-Class, GLS 600 for the Maybach GLS and EQS 680 SUV for the electric Maybach SUV. Read the entire name: the same number can appear alongside a different family, and a number alone cannot tell you which vehicle is being discussed. For example, S 680 and EQS 680 SUV are different body styles and propulsion concepts.
Do not translate a modern badge number directly into engine displacement, battery capacity or performance. The number is a variant label; the vehicle's published technical data is the place to check its powertrain and figures. Nor should a larger number be treated as a simple measure of rear-seat space, standard equipment or suitability for your journey. For those questions, compare the exact versions and options on offer. The naming system helps you narrow the search, while the specification answers the purchase questions.
Long wheelbase is more than a suffix
A buyer may see S-Class, S-Class long wheelbase and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in the same conversation. These are not automatically equivalent. In Mercedes-Benz's published comparison for the 2021 generation, the Maybach S-Class wheelbase was 180 mm longer than the long-wheelbase S-Class, with the extra length benefiting the rear compartment. That figure describes the compared generation and should not be silently applied to every year or market.
The practical question is how you intend to use the car. A chauffeur-driven buyer may care most about entering, sitting and working in the back. Someone who will drive regularly may also prioritise visibility, manoeuvrability and the front-seat experience. A long wheelbase is relevant to cabin proportions, but it does not by itself describe the rear seats, upholstery, comfort options or luggage needs. Look at the particular model and equipment list, then sit in the seats you expect to use. The badge cannot substitute for that physical check.
Special editions and design names
A name can have one more layer after the core model. Mercedes-Maybach Night Series, for example, is a design package described by Mercedes-Benz for Maybach models, with distinctive exterior and interior treatments. It is not a separate body style and does not change the meaning of S-Class, GLS or EQS SUV. Mercedes-Benz has also introduced limited special editions. Such names tell you to investigate the edition-specific finish and equipment rather than infer a new engine or platform from the edition label.
Availability is particularly important here. An announcement can describe a package for certain models and markets without establishing that it can be ordered locally today. Photographs may show optional items that are not on every car wearing the same badge. When an edition interests you, ask which details belong to the base variant, which belong to the package and which are separately specified on the exact vehicle. That prevents a visual impression from becoming an inaccurate equipment assumption.
Maybach, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG
Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-AMG are different names within the wider Mercedes-Benz range. Maybach branding directs attention to a luxury interpretation, especially materials, presence and passenger comfort. AMG identifies its own performance-oriented model family. Neither label is a universal upgrade ladder above every ordinary Mercedes-Benz model: the right choice depends on how and where the car will be used. The underlying class still matters, as do the body style and powertrain.
If you are comparing a Maybach S-Class with a standard S-Class, identify the same generation and check the cabin, wheelbase and exact equipment. If you are comparing a Maybach GLS with a Maybach EQS SUV, first decide whether the combustion-engine GLS family or an electric SUV suits your use. A numerical badge cannot make that decision for you. For a broader view of classes and body styles, explore our Mercedes-Benz model range article.
Turn the badge into a useful shortlist
Write down the complete advertised name, including the Mercedes-Maybach prefix, class or family, number, body style and any drivetrain or edition wording. Then check the model year and the actual specification of the car you are considering. This is especially useful when two listings shorten their titles differently: one may omit 4MATIC or an edition name even though those details matter to your comparison. Ask for the full vehicle description before drawing conclusions.
Next, rank the features that affect your use: rear-seat comfort, ability to carry passengers or luggage, preference for electric driving, and the design treatment you want. Match those needs to a specific car rather than treating a badge as a complete answer. At Avangard Motors, the official Mercedes-Benz dealer in Armenia, we can discuss the Mercedes-Maybach models and configurations relevant to your plans, explain the equipment of a particular vehicle and arrange a closer look where appropriate.
